Special Thanks to Frank Tarzi and Matt Barry
Kino Lorber is offering SciFi Japan readers a chance to win the South Korean giant monster movie YONGARY, MONSTER OF THE DEEP on Blu-ray.
Released in its native country as THE GREAT MONSTER YONGGARY (대괴수 용가리, Daegoesu Yonggary) in 1967, this cult-classic was Korea’s first entry into the kaiju movie genre, made famous by the Japanese with the classics GODZILLA and GAMERA. YONGARY was exported to several countries including the United States, Germany, France and Italy… but in the process, the original film elements were mistakenly shipped overseas and subsequently lost. With the Korean language negative unavailable, the only complete version is the 1969 English dub by American International Pictures.
Kino Lorber has released YONGARY, MONSTER OF THE DEEP on Blu-ray ($29.95) and DVD ($19.95) with an HD transfer of the 35mm interpositive of the AIP version in 2.35:1 widescreen. The main special feature is an excellent audio commentary by SciFi Japan contributors Steve Ryfle (ICONS OF SCI-FI: TOHO COLLECTION, Japan’s Favorite Mon-Star) and Kim Song-ho (Cine 21, Monster Preservation Site). Also included are trailers for THE PHANTOM FROM 10,000 LEAGUES and THE MONSTER THAT CHALLENGED THE WORLD.
After a nuclear test causes a massive earthquake, scientists realize that the quake is the least of their problems… the intense radiation has awoke the legendary reptilian monster, Yongary. Martial law is declared and cities are evacuated as the armed forces battle the fearsome creature with all the arsenal firearms available to them. Yongary creates destruction throughout Korea as scientists race against time to create the only weapon to stop the monster before it destroys the whole country.
