Sion Sono’s THE VIRGIN PSYCHICS Press Notes
I am psychic! You are psychic! Everyone is psychic… but still virgin!
Hot on the heels of his new movie, TAG (リアル鬼ごっこ, Real Onigokko), master filmmaker Sion Sono (WHY DON’T YOU PLAY IN HELL?, TOKYO TRIBE) returns to the big screen with THE VIRGIN PSYCHICS (映画 みんな！エスパーだよ！, Eiga Minna! Esupa Dayo!), another film full of laughs and love through the eyes of a virgin teenager who wishes to become a hero by saving the world with his suddenly acquired psychic power. Based on the manga by Kiminori Wakasugi (Detroit Metal City), the film is an adaptation of the TV series (also directed by Sono), which received 2013 Galaxy Honors for programs recommended.
Shota Sometani, the winner of the Marcello Mastroianni Award at the Venice International Film Festival for his performance in HIMIZU (ヒミズ, 2012), plays the geeky virgin psychic. Sometani previously starred in THE VIRGIN PSYCHICS television series as well as LESSON OF THE EVIL and the PARASYTE film series. The cast also includes Elaiza Ikeda (HIGH SCHOOL DEBUT) and Erina Mano (SPEC: CLOSE ～INCARNATION/REINCARNATION～, THE NEXT GENERATION -PATLABOR-, SHINJUKU SWAN, TAG).
Sion Sono co-wrote the screenplay with THE VIRGIN PSYCHICS television series writer Shinichi Tanaka. The film’s music was composed by longtime collaborator Tomohide Harada (HIMIZU, COLD FISH, LOVE EXPLOSURE). Hajime Kanda (YAKUZA APOCALYPSE) is the Director of Photography.
A high-school student named Yoshiro Kamogawa (Shota Sometani) has never had the spotlight in his life and spends his days aimlessly. What only shines in his life is a girl named Sae Asami (Erina Mano) at his school. Even while being completely disregarded by her, he still dreams of becoming her true love in the future.
One day, he receives a mind-reading psychic power. As he looks around, there seem to be more psychics born in the city, and somehow they are all virgins! One uses his psychokinetic power to fulfill his sexual desire, another turns into a flasher using teleportation ability…
With the arrival of the psychics like Yoshiro, the city gets gradually infested with the erotic terrorism evoked by a mysterious group. Knowing he has never received any attention from the girl of his dreams, Yoshiro determines to use his power to save the world from this steamy chaos and show off what he has got to the love of his life!
