THE NEXT GENERATION -PATLABOR- (ザ ネクスト ジェネレーション -パトレイバー-, Za Nekusuto Jenereeshon – Patoreibaa -), the live-action series based on the MOBILE POLICE PATLABOR (機動警察パトレイバー, Kidoo Keisatsu Patoreibaa) manga and anime, released its final episode on January 10, 2015.
THE NEXT GENERATION -PATLABOR- is an original story set in the timeline of the anime movies. Supervised by director Mamoru Oshii (GHOST IN THE SHELL, THE SKY CRAWLERS), the series ran for thirteen episodes (numbered 0-12) which were released in seven chapters. In Japan, each chapter received a two week run in theaters — where limited edition Blu-rays were also sold — followed by a regular Blu-ray and DVD release. The story of Episode 12 will conclude with a feature-length film on May 1, 2015.
SciFi Japan is pleased to present a Series Guide for THE NEXT GENERATION -PATLABOR- with information, high-res photos, and promotional artwork provided by the series’ production company and international sales agent, Tohokushinsha Film Corporation, and Japanese theatrical distributor, Shochiku Co., Ltd…
WHAT IS “PATLABOR”
Labor: A robot specifically designed for heavy industry work.
The rise of Labors sparked a revolution in industry, but also in criminal activities. To combat these new Labor crimes, the police created a special unit: The Patrol Labor.
And thus, the birth of PATLABOR.
Since 1988, the MOBILE POLICE PATLABOR franchise has become a pioneer in media-mix strategy — combining comics, video games, films and novels — that resulted in a strong fan base over generations around the world.
25 years since its debut, “THE NEXT GENERATION -PATLABOR-” PARTNERS finally and proudly present a wholly new, original PATLABOR title in live-action, with Mamoru Oshii — director of the original PATLABOR TV series and animated feature films — as the chief director.
The 8-meter tall full-sized AV 98 Ingram Labor, Revolver Cannon, Command Vehicle and many other props have all come back to life. With state-of-art CGI/VFX technology, the live-action PATLABOR project now emerges as “super real entertainment”.
Chief Director: MAMORU OSHII
Born in Tokyo in 1951, Mamoru Oshii joined the anime industry in 1977, and is one of the most remarkable personalities in modern Japanese filmmaking. He introduced introspective philosophical speculation into the world of animation, at the same time influencing movie creators all around the world with his visionary style.
His main works are URUSEI YATSURA 2: BEAUTIFUL DREAMER (うる星やつら2 ビューティフルドリーマー, Urusei Yatsura 2 Byuutifuru Doriimaa, 1984), the epoch-making GHOST IN THE SHELL (GHOST IN THE SHELL/攻殻機動隊, Goosuto in za Sheru / Kookaku Kidootai, 1995), INNOCENCE (イノセンス, Inosensu, 2004, nominated for the Palme d’Or at the Festival de Cannes), TACHIGUI: THE AMAZING LIVES OF THE FAST FOOD GRIFTERS (立喰師列伝, Tachiguishi-Retsuden, 2006, selected for the 63rd Venice Film Festival) and THE SKY CRAWLERS (スカイ・クロラ, Sukai Kurora, 2008, nominated for the Golden Lion at the 65th Venice Film Festival). Oshii has also directed a number of live-action features, including AVALON (アヴァロン, 2001) and ASSAULT GIRLS (アサルトガールズ, Asarutogaaruzu, 2009).
