PATEMA INVERTED (サカサマのパテマ, Sakasama no Patema) is a powerfully unique feature-length animation from Yasuhiro Yoshiura, a director from the world of independent animation who has also drawn attention for his abilities as an original storyteller. With his indies background, he is at home throughout the entire production process, creating the story, writing the script, directing, performing as a voice actor, and editing this dramatic tour de force of a unique upside-down world.
In 2012, the backstory for the film was introduced in the four episode ONA (Original Net Animation) series PATEMA INVERTED: BEGINNING OF THE DAY (サカサマのパテマ Beginning of the Day, Sakasama no Patema: Beginning of the Day).
If you let go of her hand, she will fall into the sky…
13-year-old Patema has lived her whole life underground. Following a catastrophic attempt to harness alternative power sources, her community were driven to settle in a dark, cramped network of tunnels below ground. She roams them by torchlight, dreaming of adventures on the surface.
But she gets more adventure than she bargained for when she sneaks into a forbidden area of the settlement that takes her above ground. Patema’s world is turned upside-down — literally! Gravity pulls her away from her home and up to the surface world.
Clinging desperately to a fence, Patema is discovered by Age, a local boy. Knowing that she is likely to fall into the empty sky at any moment, she must rely on this stranger to help keep her on the ground. But when Age takes Patema’s hand, both of the float up on a light breeze. Patema shivers in fear, while Age is surprised by an experience beyond his imagination.
But gravity isn’t the only force at work here: the pair are about to be pulled into something much bigger…
