On July 17th, the Australian label Madman Entertainment will release the Korean sci-fi anthology DOOMSDAY BOOK (인류멸망보고서, Inlyumyeolmangbogoseo, 2012) on DVD and Blu-ray. From directors Kim Jee-woon, who recently directed Arnold Schwarzenegger’s Hollywood comeback in THE LAST STAND, and Im Pil-sung, director of the creepy fairytale HANSEL & GRETEL come three visions of the end of the world. The third story, “Happy Birthday”, stars Bae Doo-na from CLOUD ATLAS and THE HOST.
What waits on the other side of technology, and the innovations of the modern world? Korea is ground zero for an undead pandemic, as one man’s rotten trash brings on a zombie apocalypse. A high-tech repairman struggles as a robot finds his higher mind and challenges the of consciousness. And one family, one lost billiard ball, and one misguided internet order bring on the end of the world.
A harrowing and blackly humourous dream of society in this modern age, DOOMSDAY BOOK was an Official Selection in 2012 BFI London Film Festival, 2012 Sitges Film Festival, 2012 New York Asian Film Festival and 2012 Tokyo International Film Festival. It also won Best Film at 2012 Fantasia Film Festival in Canada.
