Kiyoshi Kurosawa Returns with REAL
Source: TBS (Tokyo Broadcasting System)
After a five year break, director Kiyoshi Kurosawa returns to the silver screen with the mystery REAL (リアル〜完全なる首長竜の日, Riaru Kanzen Naru Kubinagaryu no Hi). The film is based on Rokuro Inui’s 2011 novel A Perfect Day for Plesiosaur (Kanzen Naru Kubinagaryu no Hi), which won the grand prize at the annual This Mystery is Excellent! (このミステリーがすごい! Kono Misuterii ga Sugoi!) mystery fiction competition. Toho will release REAL in Japan on June 1st.
Kurosawa directed such highly regarded films as CURE (キュア, Kyua, 1997), SEANCE (降霊, Kourei: Ushirowo Miruna, 1999) and CHARISMA (カリスマ, Karisuma, 2001) before coming to international attention with the J-Horror hit PULSE (回路, Kairo, 2001). His last movie before REAL was the Cannes Prix Un Certain Regard winner TOKYO SONATA (トウキョウソナタ) in 2008.
Heading the cast of REAL are Takeru Sato and Haruka Ayase. Sato previously starred in MASKED RIDER DEN-O (仮面ライダー電王, Kamen Raidaa Den-O, 2007), ROOKIES (ルーキーズ, Ruukiizu, 2009) and GOEMON (ゴエモン, 2009), and last year played the lead role in the hit RUROUNI KENSHIN (るろうに剣心). Ayase starred in CYBORG SHE (僕の彼女はサイボーグ, Boku no Kanojo wa Saibogu, 2008), ICHI (市, 2008), and THE INCITE MILL －7 DAY DEATH GAME－ (インシテミル ７日間のデス・ゲーム, Inshite Miru: 7-Kakan no Desu Gemu, 2010).
In REAL, Koichi (Takeru Sato) and Atsumi (Haruka Ayase) are lovers who have known each other all their lives. A year ago, however, a suicide attempt by Atsumi left her in a coma. Through ‘sensing’, a type of neurosurgical procedure allowing contact with a comatose patient’s mind, Koichi attempts to find out why Atsumi tried to kill herself, and to bring her back to consciousness.
He enters her subconscious, and is told to look for a picture of a plesiosaur she drew when she was a child. If Koichi can find the drawing it may unlock a childhood incident buried in their past that will bring their minds together.
