Publisher Intellect Books will soon release Directory of World Cinema: Japan 2, the latest installment in their Directory of World Cinema series. Building on and bringing up to date the material presented in the first Directory of World Cinema: Japan (2010), this volume continues the exploration of the enduring classics, cult favorites, and contemporary blockbusters of Japanese cinema with new contributions from leading critics and film scholars. Directory of World Cinema: Japan 2 will be published in the United Kingdom on February 15th, with the American release set for April 15th.
Among the additions to this volume are in-depth treatments of two previously unexplored genres — youth cinema and films depicting lowerclass settings — considered alongside discussions of popular narrative forms, including J-Horror, samurai cinema, anime, and the Japanese New Wave.
Accompanying the critical essays in this volume are more than 150 new film reviews, complemented by full-color film stills, and significantly expanded references for further study. From the Golden Age to the film festival favorites of today, Directory of World Cinema: Japan 2 completes this comprehensive treatment of a consistently fascinating national cinema.
Contributors include Colette Balmain (Introduction to Japanese Horror Film), Patrick Galloway (Stray Dogs and Lone Wolves: The Samurai Film Handbook), Aaron Gerow (Kitano Takeshi), Jim Harper (Flowers from Hell: The Modern Japanese Horror Film), Helen McCarthy (The Anime Encyclopedia), Brian Ruh (Stray Dog of Anime: The Films of Mamoru Oshii) and Tom Vick (Asian Cinema: A Field Guide).
Directory of World Cinema: Japan 2 is edited by John Berra, lecturer in film studies at Nanjing University. Berra is the author of Declarations of Independence: American Cinema and the Partiality of Independent Production and the editor of Directory of World Cinema: Japan and Directory of World Cinema: American Independent, also published by Intellect.

About Intellect, Ltd.
Intellect is an independent academic publisher in the fields of creative practice and popular culture, publishing scholarly books and journals that exemplify our mission as publishers of original thinking. We aim to provide a vital space for widening critical debate in new and emerging subjects, and in this way we differ from other publishers by campaigning for the author rather than producing a book or journal to fill a gap in the market.
We publish in four distinct subject areas: visual arts, film studies, cultural and media studies, and performing arts. These categories host Intellect’s ever-expanding topics of enquiry, which include photography, drawing, curation, community music, gaming and scenography. Intellect titles are often multidisciplinary, presenting scholarly work at the cross section of arts, media and creative practice.
Intellect seeks to offer an unbiased platform for quality critical debate; we are committed to representing the author’s voice authentically, without imposition of our personal ideas or opinions. We place great emphasis on providing a service to our authors and editors.
We have a robust international distribution arrangement, including partners such as the University of Chicago Press, Turpin Distribution, Gardners, Inbooks and Book Editions.
