GAMERA VS. ZIGRA/GAMERA: THE SUPER MONSTER DOUBLE-FEATURE COLLECTOR’S EDITION DVD

Final Two Classic Gamera Movies to be Released March 15th
Source: Shout! Factory press release, Golden Media Group, Inc.
Special Thanks to Tom Chen, Roy McAree and Richard Noboru Kekahuna

The wait is over! On March 15, 2011, Shout! Factory will unleash the final two films in Daiei Motion Picture Company’s illustrious Gamera franchise: GAMERA VS. ZIGRA and GAMERA: THE SUPER MONSTER! Witness twice the excitement as Gamera takes on the malevolent underwater alien creature Zigra and then revisits each of his deadliest foes on by one while trying to save the word! Both films feature newly remastered transfers in their original Japanese language as well as English dubs.

Until the partnership of Shout! Factory and Kadokawa Pictures in May 2010, the original Gamera films were woefully underrepresented on DVD in the United States, especially in featuring the authentic original Japanese versions of the films. But that has changed with the recent releases of GAMERA THE GIANT MONSTER, GAMERA VS. BARUGON, the two double feature collections GAMERA VS. GYAOS/GAMERA VS. VIRAS and GAMERA VS. GUIRON/GAMERA VS. JIGER and now GAMERA VS. ZIGRA/GAMERA: THE SUPER MONSTER.

The GAMERA VS. ZIGRA/GAMERA: THE SUPER MONSTER DOUBLE-FEATURE COLLECTOR’S EDITION DVD has a suggested retail price of $19.93.

Special Thanks to Marc Walkow

On April 6, 1974, the Fuji Television Network debuted the first episode of DENJIN ZABOGA (電人ザボーガー), a live action superhero series from P-Productions (THE SPACE GIANTS, SPECTREMAN). Created by manga writer Kazuo Koike (Lone Wolf and Cub, Crying Freeman), the show starred Akira Yamaguchi (KAMEN RIDER V3) as Yutaka Daimon, a secret police agent who battles sinister organizations with the help of his transforming robot Zaboga (played by Yoichiro Tajiri). The series ran for 52 episodes through June 29, 1975. The first 39 episodes were also broadcast in Hawaii with English subtitles as DENJIN ZABORGER.

Now, as DENJIN ZABOGA approaches its fortieth anniversary, the story has been reworked and updated for the new movie KARATE-ROBO ZABORGAR (電人ザボーガー劇場版, Denjin Zabogaa: Gekijoo-ban, 2011) from director Noboru Iguchi.

Produced by Nikkatsu Corporation’s genre label Sushi Typhoon, KARATE-ROBO ZABORGAR will make its world premiere this Friday, January 28th at the International Film Festival Rotterdam. Iguchi will be present for the premiere, and for the first encore screening on January 29th. A promotional event for the film is also planned for late February at the Yubari International Fantastic Film Festival in Hokkaido. Later in 2011, KARATE-ROBO ZABORGAR will play at various film festivals around the world, though exact locations and dates have not yet been announced.

The Korean studio CJ Entertainment announced on January 26 (Korean date) that the company and the American distributor Roadside Attractions LLC have reached a deal via MOU (memorandum of understanding) for the North American release of THE LAST GODFATHER (라스트 갓파더, 2010). The movie is the latest comedy by writer/director Shim Hyung-rae, the filmmaker behind such monster movies as YONGGARY (용가리 aka REPTILIAN, 1999/2001) and DRAGON WARS (D-WAR, 2007).

THE LAST GODFATHER is about Young-gu (played by director Shim himself, who is also a popular comedian and actor in Korea), who in fact is a long-lost son of the 1950s fictional New York mob boss Don Carini (Harvey Keitel). Before retirement, Don Carini calls the dim-witted Young-gu to New York and announces he will be the next godfather. Following the Don’s orders, his henchmen try to educate Young-gu on how to “fight like a man” and become a true gangster. A series of unexpected comedic incidents ensue.

A Look at the Anime Films KING OF EDEN and PARADISE LOST
Author: Elliot Gay

Your mileage when watching EDEN OF THE EAST THE MOVIE 1: KING OF EDEN (東のエデン 劇場版ⅠThe King of Eden, Higashi no Eden Gekijooban I: The King of Eden, 2009) and EDEN OF THE EAST THE MOVIE 2: PARADISE LOST (東のエデン 劇場版Ⅱ Paradise Lost, Higashi no Eden Gekijooban II: Paradise Lost, 2010) will vary based on how much you enjoyed the series that came before. The elements that you enjoyed in the show’s run on television, such as the high animation quality, well composed music and likable characters are still the same as ever. However, if you found yourself disagreeing with the writing or any of the above elements, these movies will do little to change your mind. In a few words, it is simply more of the same. Is that necessarily a bad thing however?

Sushi Typhoon’s HELLDRIVER (日本分断 HELL DRIVER, Nihon Bundan: Heru Doraibaa, 2010) is the latest movie from cult-favorite splatter film director Yoshihiro Nishimura. The all-out zombie epic has been playing the international film festival circuit.

The following press notes and images are courtesy of Sushi Typhoon…

WELCOME TO ZOMBIE WORLD!

An alien-spawned, mysterious mist blankets the northern half of Japan, transforming those who inhale it into ravenous, flesh-eating zombies hell-bent on devouring the surviving human population. Plunged into chaos, Japan is torn in two— the southern half of the country, where the populace remains untouched by the deadly gas, lives behind a heavily-fortified wall, while the northern half is a lawless, zombie-infected wasteland. Political forces are locked in a stalemate over whether the living dead should remain protected as family members or exterminated like a plague. The economy withers away, and all hope seems lost for the people and the nation of Japan.

Sentai Filmworks Acquires INFINITE STRATOS

Brand New Anime Series to Begin Simulcasting This Month in North America
Source: Sentai Filmworks, Anime Network press releases
Official Site: tbs.co.jp/anime/is (Japan)
Special Thanks to David Williams and Christian Lopez

Sentai Filmworks has announced its acquisition of INFINITE STRATOS (IS<インフィニット・ストラトス>, IS< Infinitto Sutoratosu >, 2011), the latest hit anime series from 8-Bit (DURARARA!!, MACROSS FRONTIER). Based on the series of hit novels by Izuru Yumizuru that have already spawned a hit manga and internet radio series, INFINITE STRATOS takes the battle of the sexes to a new level, flipping conventional gender relationships through a maverick series of high speed inverted power rolls over the course of 12 extraordinary episodes. The series debuted on Japanese television this past January 6th, and will begin simulcasting in North America this month on Anime Network Online.

10 years ago, the development of the revolutionary Infinite Stratos powered exoskeleton changed the world’s balance of power overnight… but unfortunately, while the distribution of IS systems to every nation on Earth HAS ushered in a new era of peace, the fact that only women have thus far been able to pilot the Stratos systems has sent the relationship between the XX and XY-chromosomed halves of the human race into a spiraling tailspin!

So when 15 year old Ichika Orimura is suddenly discovered to be the first male with the ability to control an IS, whatever plans he might have had for his own future are tossed out the window even as he’s thrown to the wolves and enrolled at the otherwise entirely female Infinite Stratos Academy by order of the Japanese government!

It’s one Boy Vs. all the Girls, and the question isn’t who’ll come out on top… it’s who will survive the educational experience in INFINITE STRATOS!

GANTZ Press Notes

English Language Press Notes for Highly Anticipated Manga Adaptation
Source: VIZ Pictures, NTV
Official Movie Site: gantz-movie.com (Japan), gantzmovies.com (US)
Special Thanks to Rieko Fuji

The long-awaited adaptation of the suspense action manga GANTZ is finally here!

Based on the popular Japanese manga and anime series, GANTZ is the ultimate survival game. Summoned by the mysterious black orb known as “GANTZ”, childhood friends Kei Kurono and Masaru Kato are forced into participating in the extermination of ‘aliens’ in order to survive. While Kurono chooses to fight for survival, Kato refuses to engage in battle and rejects a world controlled by violence. Kurono and Kato, along with the others sharing their fate, are pushed to their limits in the relentless battles against the aliens.

Due to its intense action and strikingly original story, a movie adaptation was once considered impossible. However, after NTV led the adaptations of DEATH NOTE and 20TH CENTURY BOYS to success, a movie adaptation of GANTZ became possible with director Shinsuke Sato. The highly-awaited movie project has two parts; the first installment coming in January 2011, and the second in spring 2011.

Review: KATANAGATARI

Author: Elliot Gay
Official Site: katanagatari.com, www.fujitv.co.jp/katanagatari

SPOILER WARNING: This article contains plot details for a new animated series.

In 2007, young author Nisioisin decided to challenge himself. He was to write twelve novels over the course of twelve months. Each novel would represent a month of real-time travel for the protagonist. As such, the reader went through the different seasons just as the characters did. The name of this twelve novel journey was Katanagatari (刀語), loosely translatable as “Sword Story”. As the title aptly describes, the narrative is focused on a set of twelve swords, and those who wield them. The story initially plays out like an elongated video game fetch quest, with our heroes seeking out each of the twelve katana.

In the same way that Nisioisin released a novel once every month for a year, animation studio White Fox opted to produce KATANAGATARI as a twelve episode series, with one episode airing at the beginning of each month for a year. Starting in January and ending in December of 2010, the anime series keeps the real time pacing of its predecessor. With the total runtime of each episode approximately one hour, each episode is more or less the equivalent of two average anime episodes. As to why the series wasn’t simply split into twenty-four episodes, keeping to the original narrative pacing makes more sense considering the self contained nature of each novel.

We’re pleased to present a thorough overview of the GODZILLA: THE SERIES toy line with a look at advertising art, catalog listings, concept sketches, and dozens of photos of unreleased plastic and resin prototype figures now in the collection of Jonathan Shyman. Jonathan’s detailed presentation is further supplemented by information provided by former Trendmasters staffers Brian Weinstock and Bill Bronson.
