Ultraseven X in Latest Issue of UK Magazine NEO

Source: Uncooked Media Ltd. press release
Official Website: neomag.co.uk

Published by Uncooked Media Ltd., NEO is the UK’s only magazine dedicated to Japanese and Asian pop culture— specifically, anime, manga, Asian cult cinema and Japanese pop music (J-Pop). Although anime is covered in depth within every issue, NEO’s remit is to cover a wider range of material than you would find in an anime-only magazine.

The latest issue, NEO #55, went on sale this past Thursday, January 29th. Among the many featured articles is a look at Ultraman written by SciFi Japan’s own James Ballard. In 2007, James had a cameo in the series ULTRASEVEN X, and the NEO report details his experiences on the set of an Ultraman show.

NEO is available through traditional UK newsagents, larger stores like WHSmith, Martins, Borders and Spar, as well as the bigger branches of Virgin and HMV.

Source: Shochiku Co., Ltd.
Official Movie Site: GeGeGe
Special Thanks to Aki Harimoto and JM Shop

A mystery of missing women, triggered by by a forbidden romance between a man and a yokai, concealed in a cursed song…

Shigeru Mizuki‘s ever-popular manga series GeGeGe no Kitaro was first adapted into a big-budget live action fantasy movie in the spring of 2007. KITARO was a smash hit in Japan, reaching 2.3 billion yen ($25 million US) at the box office. Last year, the main cast and crew reunited for the sequel KITARO AND THE MILLENNIUM CURSE (Gegege no Kitaro Sennen Noroi Uta)… but this time the story was aimed not only at children, but for older audiences as well.

The new movie deals with a 1,000 year-old forbidden romance between a yokai— those strange, mystical beings of Japanese legend— and a mortal man. This tragedy reflects the loneliness of being a yokai and the arrogance and weakness of mankind. Morally trapped between these two worlds is the half yokai/half human hero Kitaro and the human heroine Kaede. Their struggle to reach mutual understanding eventually leads them to an awareness beyond their differences. The trust and the friendship of Kitaro and his yokai partners proves the key to overcoming the morbid destiny that awaits them.

Official Movie Site: ICHI
Special Thanks to Aki Harimoto

The famed ZATOICHI returns to the screen once again… this time as the female character ICHI. With eyes that cannot see, the audience will reach her soul, where emotions burst with relentless action!

Zatoichi— a wandering blind swordsman who protects the innocent and fights injustice— has been one of the the most popular samurai heroes in Japanese cinema and television. The character was featured in one of Japan’s longest-running movie series, with 26 films produced between 1962 and 1989 starring Shintaro Katsu as Zatoichi. Katsu also played the role in the 112 episode television series THE TALE OF ZATOICHI, which aired from 1974 to 1979. In 2003, “Beat” Takeshi Kitano directed and starred in the big budget update ZATOICHI (US title THE BLIND SWORDSMAN: ZATOICHI).

In ICHI, Shochiku Co., Ltd. brings the Zatoichi character brack to movie screens in a new female incarnation. Ichi is a lone goze (blind woman singer) who has become separated from her traveling entertainment troupe. Wondering how she will find her place in life, she carries only a shamisen (a traditional Japanese stringed instrument) and a walking stick with a hidden blade inside.

SPACE BATTLESHIP YAMATO, Part 1: the Anime Classic that Nearly Wasn’t

Author: Tim Eldred, Starblazers.com and Greasemonkeybook.com

Anyone who’s been paying attention over the last twenty years or so knows that Japanese cartoons (“anime”) have pretty much changed the world forever with their dynamism, variety, and impossibly eye-catching visuals. Anyone who’s into anime now probably had a “gateway” program that got them started. In the 1990s there was POKEMON, SAILOR MOON, EVANGELION, and COWBOY BEBOP. In the 1970s there was SPEED RACER and BATTLE OF THE PLANETS. But for my money the rubber really hit the road in the 1980s with AKIRA, ROBOTECH, and the greatest of them all: STAR BLAZERS.

Why so great? Part of it was timing. STAR BLAZERS hit American TV in 1979, when science-fiction movies were on a dramatic upswing and the appetite for more was never greater. It was a genre that American cartoon companies showed little to no interest in exploiting, but Japan had fully embraced many years earlier. And if you wanted to see daily SF on TV that matched what was happening in the movie theatres, you could do no better than STAR BLAZERS.

Join SciFi Japan and author Tim Eldred for a series of articles looking back at the influential anime series SPACE BATTLESHIP YAMATO. Chapters will run monthly through most of 2009!

It is hard to imagine that the Power Rangers franchise is 16 years old! There are really not a lot of kid’s shows out there that can lay that type of claim for constant original programming. Us old fogies at SciFi Japan realized we’ve been ignoring this particular area of Japanese-influenced action for a little too long, so I took a look at the first two volumes of POWER RANGERS JUNGLE FURY entitled “Into the Jungle” and “Way of the Master”, which comprise the first 12 episodes of the series as seen on Jetix through Toon Disney in 2008.

The Loss of a Local Legend

CREATURE FEATURES host Bob Wilkins Passes Away
Author: Bob Johnson
Thanks to: Tom Wyrsch, Aaron Cooper, Butch Portillo and Damon Foster

“Don’t stay up late, it’s not worth it,” Bob Wilkins warned as he would lean back in his yellow rocking chair, smoke wafting from his big cigar. But monster movie fans in Northern California stayed up with him every Saturday night anyway. From 1971 through 1979, Bob Wilkins brought the best and worst of fantasy, horror and science fiction to audiences throughout the San Francisco Bay Area, in the Sacramento Valley, and nationwide through KTVU’s status as a cable super station. His dry wit and deadpan humor won over audiences, and CREATURE FEATURES would often beat SATURDAY NIGHT LIVE in the local ratings.

On January 7, 2009 Sacramento and the San Francisco Bay Area lost one of its most beloved television icons after a long battle with Alzheimer’s. Continued…

Peter Fernandez: Speed Dubbing!

The Man of a Thousand Dub Tracks
Author: Bob Johnson
Special Thanks to Keith Aiken and Aaron Cooper

Peter Fernandez is probably one of the more famous of the many behind the scenes heroes that work hard so we can enjoy movies and television shows from other countries. Most people who have heard of him think about SPEED RACER when Peter’s name is mentioned. And why not? Peter was the producer, director and writer of the series, as well as the voices of Speed Racer and Racer X.

However, there is so much more to the man than just one series or two characters. Since the 1940s, Peter has been a child model, a Broadway and movie actor, and a key figure responsible for most of the dubbing for movies and shows we’ve all grown up watching from Japan, China, Italy, Mexico and other countries. In addition to SPEED RACER, his long list of voice credits includes GODZILLA VS THE SEA MONSTER, ASTROBOY, ULTRAMAN, THE SPACE GIANTS, SON OF GODZILLA, GIGANTOR, STAR BLAZERS, the Sergio Leone/Clint Eastwood spaghetti westerns… and even a “clean version” of George Romero’s DAY OF THE DEAD!

In this interview we tried to touch on all aspects of his life and work to give readers a better understanding of the remarkable career he has had. Even so, I feel we only managed to scratch the surface.

One of the biggest events in recent Japanese cinema is 20th CENTURY BOYS, the movie trilogy adapted from the internationally acclaimed sci-fi manga series. The three pictures were filmed together (as with THE LORD OF THE RINGS films) by a partnership of the Nippon Television Network, Shogakukan, Toho Co., VAP, Yomiuri Television, Dentsu, Yomiuri Shimbun, Cine Bazaar, Office Crescendo, and d-rights. Produced at a combined budget of 6 billion yen (approximately $60 million US), 20th CENTURY BOYS is the most expensive film project in Japanese history.

The first 20th CENTURY BOYS was released in Japan by Toho on August 30, 2008. It premiered in the #2 spot behind Sony Pictures’ HANCOCK and moved to the top of the box office in its second week of release. By mid-December the film had earned nearly $40 million, making it a major box office hit in Japan. The second movie will open in Japan on January 31.

NTV is handling world sales of 20th CENTURY BOYS and the film was screened this past November at the 2008 American Film Market. It has also been picked up for distribution in more than two dozen countries, including the United Kingdom where it will open on February 20.

NTV has provided photos, promotional art, and detailed production notes for the first 20th CENTURY BOYS movie which we are pleased to share with SciFi Japan readers. 2008: The Year In Review

A Look Back at Asian Sci-Fi Throughout the Year
Author: Aaron Cooper
Special Thanks: The entire staff of SciFi Japan

2008 was intriguing in the landscape of Japanese science fiction and fantasy films. To some, it may have appeared very dry; to others it seemed a great boon of varied material. Big names like Godzilla and Gamera were mostly no-shows, but the slack appears to be taken up in a variety of outlets by a wide range of talent depending on your tastes.

The staff of SciFi Japan took another moment to ponder over the events of the past year, and attempted to come up with the most defining moments of 2008. You may agree or disagree but regardless, the year held moments for everyone whether you knew it or not!

A SciFi JAPAN EXCLUSIVE

SPOILER WARNING: This article contains plot details and images from a new movie.

In the midst of World War II, the battleship Yamato, the pride of the Japanese navy, joins with the main squadrons of the Combined Fleet in the South Seas. While lurking in the waters off the Truk Islands, the crew of the Yamato spot what is believed to be an enemy submarine and fire on it. The attack is a success, however what sinks to the sea bottom is not a submarine at all but a massive mysterious creature that will later bring disaster upon the fleet…

In November of 2005, the American Film Market in Santa Monica, CA had the first screenings of a new daikaiju movie called DEEP SEA MONSTER- REIGO (Shinkaiju Reigo). Made by a highly-regarded fan turned professional filmmaker, and featuring the talents of popular genre performers and FX artists, REIGO was the first Japanese monster picture in years that was not a sequel, remake, or based upon a pre-existing franchise. The film was originally scheduled for release in 2006 but suffered numerous delays— and a title change to REIGO: THE DEEP-SEA MONSTER VS THE BATTLESHIP YAMATO — before finally beginning theatrical screenings in mid-2008.

SciFi Japan begins 2009 with an exclusive look at REIGO: THE DEEP-SEA MONSTER VS THE BATTLESHIP YAMATO, featuring production info, story synopsis, cast and crew bios, promotional art, and dozens of photos courtesy of the filmmakers, original production company Option Inc., and international sales agent Gold View Co., Ltd.
