Former Tsuburaya Productions managing director Koichi Takano passed away on November 30, 2008 at a hospital in the Tokyo metropolitan area at the age of 73 from emphysema.

Official Site: uninvitedmovie.com

Anna Ivers returns home after spending time in the hospital following the tragic death of her mother. Her recovery suffers a setback when she discovers her father has become engaged to her mother’s former nurse. That night, Anna is visited by her mother’s ghost, who warns her of Rachel’s intentions. Together, Anna and her sister Alex try to convince their father that his current fiancée is not who she pretends…

Exactly one year ago today, SciFi Japan ran an article on DreamWorks Pictures’ TALE OF TWO SISTERS, a remake of the 2003 Korean film A TALE OF TWO SISTERS (Janghwa, Hongryeon). The original movie, written and directed by Kim Jee-woon (THE QUIET FAMILY), was a critical and box office hit, becoming the most successful horror film in Korean history.

DreamWorks’ plans for an English language remake were first announced in June 2006, and the American version was scheduled for a 2008 theatrical launch. That release was eventually pushed back to January 30, 2009 and the film will now come to US cinemas as THE UNINVITED.

King Kong

Ten times as big as a man!

Thirty three years after King Kong first took the world by storm, the Eighth Wonder of the World returned in an all-new Saturday morning cartoon series. While rarely seen today, the show is fondly remembered by older viewers and holds a special distinction with Toho monster movie fans since it inspired both GODZILLA VS THE SEA MONSTER (Gojira, Ebira, Mosura: Nankai-no Daiketto, 1966) and KING KONG ESCAPES (Kingu Kongu no Gyakushu, 1967).

A SciFi JAPAN EXCLUSIVE

No one has ever seen his face… He could be anyone…

Editor’s Note: Last month I visited the American Film Market 2008 in Santa Monica, CA to see some of the latest films from Japan. Among the screenings I attended was the world premiere of K-20: LEGEND OF THE MASK (K-20: Kaijin Niju-Menso Den), a great action adventure film set in an alternate reality version of 1949 Tokyo.

The film was produced by Nippon Television Network (NTV), Robot Communications, and Toho, and stars Asian superstar Takeshi Kaneshiro (RETURNER, RED CLIFF) as a circus acrobat who is framed by a mysterious Batman/Shadow-like villain. Toho is opening K-20 in theaters across Japan this weekend, while NTV is handling sales of the movie to foreign buyers.

NTV has provided images and English language production notes for K-20: LEGEND OF THE MASK. SciFi Japan is pleased to present this early look at the film, and we also invite our readers to check out the recent coverage of NTV’s upcoming adaptation on Osamu Tezuka’s MW and keep an eye out for our reports on the new disaster film 252: SIGNS OF LIFE (252: Seizonsha Ari) and Toho/NTV’s blockbuster sci-fi epic 20TH CENTURY BOYS (20 Seki Shonen).

MW: Osamu Tezuka’s Controversial Manga Becomes a Live Action Film

Movie to Commemorate the 80th Anniversary of Tezuka’s Birth
Author: Keith Aiken
Source: NTV (Nippon Television Network), Vertical, Inc.
Official Site: mw.gyao.jp

SPOILER WARNING: This article contains plot details and images from a movie scheduled for release in 2009.

The upcoming live action feature film MW is based on Osamu Tezuka’s manga of the same name. Originally serialized in the Shogakukan magazine Big Comic from 1976-1978, MW was a tremendous departure from the cute, Disney-esque style Tezuka was known for. A dark, downbeat, and violent thriller, the manga took a hard look at such topics as governement cover ups, religion, the nature of good and evil, homoeroticism, the effects of excessive technology on nature, and the US military presence in Japan. Thirty years after it was first published, MW still packs a punch.

The movie version of MW will commemorate the 80th Anniversary of Osamu Tezuka’s birth. The film is being developed DN Dream Partners LLP, a production company formed in April 2006 by the Nippon Television Network (NTV) and the telecommunications company NTT DoCoMo Inc.. Previous DN Dream Partners productions have included the hit DEATH NOTE anime and movie series as well as the TENCHI MUYO spinoff show SASAMI.

Playing the lead roles are Hiroshi Tamaki (WATER BOYS, MIDNIGHT EAGLE) as Michio Yuki and Takayuki Yamada (TRAIN MAN: DENSHA OTOKO, CROWS ZERO) as Yutaro Garai.

Mutsumi Toyoshima – A Blueprint for Success

Top Toho Special Effects Designer has Died
Authors: Ed Godziszewski with Oki Miyano
Special Thanks to Yasuyuki Inoue

Mutsumi Toyoshima, widely regarded as one of the best production designers on Toho special effects movies from the 1960s through the 1980s, died November 17.

As a key member of Toho’s special effects art department, Toyoshima designed and created blueprints for many of the most famous vehicles, props, and machines seen in the studio’s monster, science fiction, and war films. Among his designs are the popular Maser Cannon (introduced in THE WAR OF THE GARGANTUAS in 1966), the Solgell Island silver iodide towers from SON OF GODZILLA (Gojira no Mosuko, 1967), the UN submarine Explorer from KING KONG ESCAPES (Kingu Kongu no Gyakushu, 1967), the Moonlight SY-3 from DESTROY ALL MONSTERS (Kaiju Soshingeki, 1968), the Black Shark from LATITUDE ZERO (Ido Zero Daisakusen,1969), and the Super-X from THE RETURN OF GODZILLA (Gojira, a.k.a. GODZILLA 1985, 1984).

SciFi Japan is honored to present a tribute to Mutsumi Toyoshima by Ed Godziszewski and Oki Miyano, who knew Mr. Toyoshima and had visited with him in recent years. The article includes photos and quotes from an unpublished interview conducted by Oki and Ed at Mr. Toyoshima’s home on August 13, 2004.
