A SciFi JAPAN EXCLUSIVE

Recently, video clips from a new kaiju production entitled G surfaced online. Filled with crazy camerawork, extreme monster and robot action, over-the-top violence, slapstick comedy, and an assortment of special effects techniques, the preview footage quickly caught the attention of Japanese monster movie buffs.

SciFi Japan is pleased to put the rumors to rest with news straight from the director/writer/editor/FX director of G. Filmmaker Kiyotaka Taguchi has provided an exclusive look at story details, cast and crew information, behind the scenes photos, promotional art, and dozens of screen shots from the latest monster movie from Japan.

On the eve of his departure for Japan, Rob Hawkins (Michael Stahl-David) sees his going-away party as an opportunity to confess unresolved feelings and tie up loose ends. His agenda takes an unexpected turn when a jolt shakes the revelers.

The crowd quiets down to watch news reports of an earthquake, then rushes to the roof to assess the damage. A fireball explodes on the distant horizon. A power failure follows. Confusion gives way to panic as the partygoers stumble through the blackout and into the streets.

Amid the human screams and one inhuman roar, Rob and his friends must traverse a landscape that has changed, overtaken by something otherworldly, terrifying, monstrous…

On July 3, 2007 Paramount Pictures’ blockbuster hit TRANSFORMERS opened in more than 4,000 theaters across the United States. Among the multitude of commercials and previews before the film, Paramount included a trailer for an unnamed monster movie from JJ Abrams’ production company Bad Robot. Beginning with a party and ending with the decapitated head of the Staue of Liberty smashing into a New York City street, the trailer captivated audiences and caused a wave of internet searches for any information about the mystery production.

In fact, the jingle has become so famous that to have anything Speed Racer related without it would be like having James Bond without the famous John Barry theme. Famous for its whirling beginning representative of a speed engine and catchy lyrics, the song is a recognizable and enjoyable piece of pop-culture.

UK Theatrical Screening of Osamu Tezuka’s METROPOLIS

Source: Barbican Centre
Special Thanks to Laura Bushell, Sarah Harvey Publicity

In the mighty city of Metropolis, powerful men jockeying for position under dictator Duke Red plot their own advancement, while detective Ban and his nephew come from overseas hunting an international criminal. Meanwhile the Duke is driving technology to its limits in pursuit of two insane dreams - control of a superweapon and recovery of a beloved, lost child - while another child yearns for his love and approval. All the while, the rumblings of dissent are growing, as a despised urban underclass seeks justice in this very contemporary classic.

On June 24, the Barbican Centre in London will host a theatrical screening of the 2001 anime film METROPOLIS, directed by Rintaro (GALAXY EXPRESS 999, DOOMED MEGALOPOLIS). The movie is based on the 1949 manga by the legendary Osamu Tezuka (ASTRO BOY, AMBASSADOR MAGMA), which in turn was inspired by a single image from Fritz Lang’s classic silent movie. Animated by a stellar team after Tezuka’s death, METROPOLIS is both a powerful tribute and a wonderful film in its own right, with memorable imagery and a jazz score that’s pure delight. (Japan 2001, 108 min, PG)

The Barbican Centre is the largest multi-arts centre in Europe, featuring art, film, music, theatre, dance and education all under one roof. It is located on Silk Street, London EC2Y 8DS. For more information check the Cinema Hotline at 0845 120 7527.

METROPOLIS Tuesday June 24, 8.30pm
Standard ticket prices:
Adults: £8.50/£7.00 online
Barbican members/Over 60s/Students in full time education with valid student card/unwaged: £6.00

The screening will be introduced by Helen McCarthy, author of The Anime! Movie Guide, Hayao Miyazaki: Master of Japanese Animation, and founder of the magazine AnimeFX.

The criminal mastermind Dr Who is hired by a villainous nation looking for the Element X needed to build their nuclear arsenal. After the real Kong is discovered on Mondo Island by a UN research team led by Carl Nelson, Dr Who kidnaps Kong and Nelson’s team. KING KONG ESCAPES was Toho’s second Kong film (following KING KONG VS GODZILLA) and was based on the American animated series KING KONG by Rankin/Bass Productions (SANTA CLAUS IS COMING TO TOWN, RUDOLPH THE RED-NOSED REINDEER). The movie was directed by Ishiro Honda, with special effects by Eiji Tsuburaya, and a cast featuring Rhodes Reason, Akira Takarada, Linda Miller, Mie Hama, and Hideo Amamato.
