Mr. Teruyoshi Nakano is well known as the Tokusatsu (SPFX) director for Toho movies from the 1970s and 80s; his credits include SUBMERSION OF JAPAN, PROPHECIES OF NOSTRADAMUS (a.k.a. CATASTROPHE- 1999 and LAST DAYS OF PLANET EARTH), ESPY, THE WAR IN SPACE, and THE RETURN OF GODZILLA (a.k.a. GODZILLA 1985). Mr. Nakano was first employed by Toho in 1959 and his career started as an assistant director of live-action scenes rather than Tokusatsu. He worked under director Jun Fukuda on THE SECRET OF THE TELEGIAN, with Ishiro Honda on MOTHRA, and Shue Matsubayashi for THE LAST WAR. In 1961, he moved over to Team Tsuburaya and worked on all of Toho Tokusatsu movies under Mr. Eiji Tsuburaya.
His first movie as Tokusatsu director was the Crazy Cats film THE CRAZY’S BIG EXPLOSION in 1969. In 1973, Toho officially conferred upon him the title of Tokugi director, and his name was credited on the screen as such from SUBMERSION OF JAPAN on. The term “Tokugi” is an abbreviation of Tokushu Gijyutsu (Special Techniques). The title of Tokugi director is special honor in Toho and there are only four people who were given this title in Toho’s history; Mr. Eiji Tsuburaya, Mr. Sadamasa Arikawa, Mr. Teruyoshi Nakano and Mr. Koichi Kawakita.
In 2007, the autobiography of Mr. Teruyoshi Nakano will be published from Wides Shuppan. The title of the book is Teruyoshi Nakano, The Tokugi Director, and the authors are Mr. Teruyoshi Nakano and Mr. Katsuji Someya. This is the second work in Mr. Someya’s Toho Tokusatsu movie creator series as he published Jun Fukuda, The Movie Director in 2001. The book will be in stores in Japan this September.
